Hockey Dasher Boards

Ice hockey rinks and arenas require pucks and ice rink guarding systems to protect players and spectators from injury during play. Pucks, also known as hockey dasher boards, form the base of the ice rink enclosure and are typically made using HDPE (high-density polyethylene). Ice rink guarding extends beyond the pucks for additional protection and can be made from tempered glass or acrylic.

HDPE is the material of choice for hockey dasher boards because of its high impact strength, durability, smooth surface, moisture resistance, and low maintenance requirements. It is extremely resistant to impacts in colder temperatures, making it an ideal, logical choice for ice hockey rinks. HDPE has proven to be the industry standard for arena pucks and is widely used in most indoor sports arenas.

Many facilities currently use tempered glass as an ice protection system. However, acrylic’s popularity for ice rink protection is quickly rising due to its durability, low weight, and flexibility. Acrylic has excellent optical clarity and will not shatter like glass when broken. Acrylic is 64% lighter than tempered glass, allowing for faster and easier transitions from activity to activity. What's more, acrylic is 20% more flexible than tempered glass, significantly reducing athlete injuries.
